A Polynomial-Time Algorithm for Finding a Bounded-Curvature Path in a Narrow Corridor

We present a polynomial-time motion planning algorithm for an idealized bicycle traversing a nonforking, twisty road that is too narrow to turn around on. The best known result in the general setting of polygonal obstacles is a reduction to the first-order theory of the reals that is computable in exponential time and space. Moreover, the path normalization and redundancy elimination used by ou...

An Approximation Algorithm for General Minimum-length Bounded-curvature Paths

Prior approximation algorithms find an approximation to the shortest robust bounded-curvature path. We eliminate the condition that the approximated path is robust. Introduction. A differentiable path has curvature at most c if two circles of radius c can be placed tangent to any given point on the path (see Figure 1(a)), which restricts how quickly the path turns left or right. Such paths mode...

Discrete Dubins Paths

A Dubins path is a shortest path with bounded curvature. The seminal result in nonholonomic motion planning is that (in the absence of obstacles) a Dubins path consists either from a circular arc followed by a segment followed by another arc, or from three circular arcs [Dubins, 1957]. Dubins original proof uses advanced calculus; later, Dubins result was reproved using control theory technique...

Adaptive NC Path Generation From Massive Point Data With Bounded Error

This paper presents an approach for generating curvature-adaptive finishing tool paths with bounded error directly from massive point data in three-axis computer numerical control (CNC) milling. This approach uses the moving least-squares (MLS) surface as the underlying surface representation. A closed-form formula for normal curvature computation is derived from the implicit form of MLS surfac...

Convex tours of bounded curvature

We consider the motion planning problem for a point constrained to move along a smooth closed convex path of bounded curvature. The workspace of the moving point is bounded by a convex polygon with m vertices, containing an obstacle in a form of a simple polygon with n vertices. We present an O(m + n) time algorithm finding the path, going around the obstacle, whose curvature is the smallest po...
